Windsurfing 

Discover all the information and requirements needed to become a qualified RYA windsurfing instructor.

Qualification summary:

Assistant Instructor

Experience

Competent windsurfer 

Pre-entry assessment 

Candidates must have the recommendation of their centre’s Principal 

Training course

Courses are conducted by the Principal or Chief Instructor of the training centre. The course may be approximately 20 hours covering RYA teaching for beginners. Candidates will be assessed on their teaching ability with beginners. 

The AI’s training is limited to assisting qualified instructors and does not include first aid or powerboat handling.

Qualified to teach 

On completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  • Assist instructors in teaching windsurfing up to the standard of youth Stage 1 and adult Start Windsurfing courses. 

  • Work under the supervision of an RYA senior instructor (SI) 

Ais must never be allowed to work without direct supervision. 

Validity 

This is a centre-specific certificate, awarded by the training centre and valid for five years. 

Additional important information

RYA Windsurfing Scheme intermediate non-planing certificate including beach starting and non-planing gybe clinics. 

Start Windsurfing Instructor

Minimum age

16

Experience

Competent windsurfer 

Training course

Five-day course 

The final day will be moderated by an external trainer who will assess candidates. 

Qualified to teach

Able to teach: 

  • Start Windsurfing course.

  • Youth Windsurfing Scheme Stages 1 and 2 

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. 

Additional important information:

  • Intermediate non-planing certificate with beach starting and non-planing gybe clinics
  • First aid certificate
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work

RYA membership is required for your RYA instructor qualification

Intermediate Instructor 

Minimum age 

16

Experience

Pre-assessment 

RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor with evidence of 50 hours logged as a Start Windsurfing Instructors at RYA training centre. 

Training course 

Four-day course. You will be assessed continuously throughout the course. 

Qualified to teach 

Intermediate course and Youth Windsurfing Scheme under the supervision of a senior instructor. 

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. 

Additional important information:

  • Intermediate planing personal sailing certificate and the beach starting, and non-planing carve gybe clinics.
  • Advanced personal sailing certificate with waterstart and carve gybe clinics.
  • First aid certificate
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work

RYA membership is required for your RYA instructor qualification

Racing Instructor

Minimum age

16

Experience

You will have competed at club or regional level (windsurfing or dinghy sailing) and have knowledge of competitive windsurfing. 

Pre assessment

To qualify as a RYA Racing Instructor applicant, you should: 

  • Have practical understanding of running simple race training exercises. 

  • Have knowledge and understanding of the Team 15 philosophy and the teaching principles behind the programme. 

Training course

Two-day course. You will be assessed continuously throughout the course. 

Qualified to teach

RYA Start Racing course under supervision of a senior instructor. 

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. 

Additional important information: 

  • Start Windsurfing Instructor (or above)
  • First aid certificate
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work

RYA membership is required for your RYA instructor qualification

Foiling Instructor

Minimum age

16

Experience

RYA Sustained Flights 

Pre assessment

RYA Intermediate Instructor with personal foiling experience to a RYA Sustained Flights level 

Training course

Four-day course. You will be assessed continuously throughout the course.  

Qualified to teach

RYA First Flights or higher (Personal foiling level dependent)   

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. 

Additional important information:

  • RYA Intermediate Instructor
  • RYA Sustained Flights Certificate 
  • First aid certificate
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work 

RYA membership is required for your RYA instructor qualification

Advanced Instructor

Minimum age

18

Training course

Five-day course. You will be assessed continuously throughout the course.  

Qualified to teach

All levels of the RYA National and Youth Windsurfing scheme under the supervision of an RYA Senior Instructor 

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained. 

Additional important information:

  • Minimum personal ability of the Advanced certificate
  • RYA Intermediate Instructor Planing Instructor, with evidence of 100 hours logged
  • First aid certificate
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 

RYA membership is required for your RYA instructor qualification

Senior Instructor

Minimum age

18

Experience

Evidence of two seasons’ full-time instructing as an RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor. 
Senior Instructor self-assessment questionnaire 

Pre-entry assessment

Recommendation by a Principal of a Recognised Training Centre. 

Completion of the Senior Instructor Workbook and any preparation work sent out by the Trainers prior to the course starting.  

Training course

Courses are run on a regional basis with approximately six students. Courses are organised through the Regional Coach and staffed by one or more Application form RYA Windsurfing Trainers. 

Four-day course. The assessment will be continuous during the course. 

Application form 

Qualified to teach

On completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  • Organise and manage courses within the RYA’s Windsurfing scheme. 

  • Organise and control group windsurfing tuition (of all ages) and to supervise, assess and direct the work of their instructors. 

  • Conduct assessments and have the interpersonal skills needed to debrief unsuccessful students effectively and tactfully in a good manner. 

Validity

Five years from date of issues if supported by a valid first aid certificate. Little or no logged experience may require a re-assessment.

Windsurfing Trainer

Minimum age

Experience

Competent level of personal sailing ability, good teaching and coaching skills. motivational and leadership skills, a positive and enthusiastic approach and good communication skills. 

Pre-entry assessment

Nomination from your Regional Manager 

Pre-selection - usually over two days 

Applicants from outside the UK are occasionally trained when required and should contact RYA Training for further information. 

Training course

Five-day course with continuous assessment. 

You will need to: 

  • Demonstrate and teach any part of the national Windsurfing Scheme up to and including Intermediate Planing and clinics. 

  • Windsurf competency on a range of equipment in a variety of conditions. 

  • Plan and manage a course involving sessions ashore and afloat. 

  • Give formal presentations including the use of visual aids, showing an ability to chair and discuss. 

Qualified to teach

Will be appointed as an RYA Start Windsurfing Trainer. 

Validity

Appointed annually. After five years a practical revalidation is required.

  • Intermediate Planing Instructor (ticket held for three years plus)

  • RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work
