Information for new instructors
If you're reading this page, you've probably just received a letter from us confirming your new qualification as an RYA Instructor.
Here we will talk you through a few things you should do now that you are qualified.
Your qualification
As shown on your certificate, you are now qualified to teach certain RYA courses at training centres which are recognised by the RYA specifically to run those courses.
Your qualification does not qualify you to operate freelance outside of the Recognised Training Centre (RTC) network or to issue RYA certificates independently of an RTC.
Feedback
We are interested in two types of feedback to help us monitor and improve the standards of our courses.
First, we want to hear what you thought of the instructor course that you have just completed. Please complete the instructor course survey as soon as you can.
Second, for the courses that you run, we want to hear what your students think. Please direct all your to the student survey at the end of their course.
Updating your contact details
It's important that we are able to keep in touch with you by post and email. To make sure we can reach you, please go to 'Your Account' at the top of this screen to check we hold your current postal and email addresses, and that your account is linked to your RYA membership/reference number.
Staying current
As well as reading communications from the RYA, it's important that you stay informed and up-to-date with your subjects of interest, for example via:
- Industry websites
- Equipment manufacturers
- MAIB reports
- Notices to Mariners
- Professional bodies
- Industry magazines
- Newsletters
- Government agency websites such as MCA, MAIB, Health and Safety Executive, Ofcom and any national equivalents.
How we communicate with you
This Training Support Site is the main source of information for you and your training centre. Much of the content here is restricted, accessible only by Recognised Training Centres or instructors holding certain qualifications. You will therefore need to be signed in to see the information you need.
The Document Finder, accessible from the home page of this site, is a great way to search for documents, presentations, guidance etc. Use the filters or simple keywords to find what you want.
There is some information that is compulsory for you to receive and other communications that you can opt into if you wish.
Training Notices and Training Guidance
The main way that we communicate important changes and developments in the RYA training schemes is via Training Notices and Training Guidance. These are sent to the training centres and types of instructor that are relevant to the content. You can see the back catalogue of all Notices and Guidance on this site.
To make sure you receive future notifications please check that the address news@training.rya.org.uk is allowed through any spam filters you may have in your email settings.
RYA Wavelength
As an RYA instructor you will also receive our RYA Wavelength e-newsletter packed with the latest RYA news, coaching and teaching tips, personal development and so much more.
Conferences
The annual conferences provide opportunities to hear about plans for the year ahead, attend subject workshops, CPD (continued professional development) sessions as well as opportunities to network with other instructors and members of the RYA Training Team.
Social Media
We also share regular updates on our RYA Training social media pages. Follow us on Facebook and X (formally Twitter) to get the latest news and information.
Available for work?
If you are available to run courses at a variety of centres and want to be on the list of available instructors please complete the Are you available for work? form. We can then pass your details on to training centres that are looking for instructors on a one-off or ad hoc basis. You can also look for work on our Jobs - People wanted page.
Use of the RYA logo
Please make sure you are familiar with the RYA brand guidelines which outline the requirements for advertising and the correct use of the RYA logo.
Code of Conduct
You should already be familiar with the Code of Conduct for RYA Instructors, Coach Assessors, Trainers and Examiners from when you signed up for your instructor course. If not, please make sure you read it and adhere to it throughout your teaching.
Revalidating your qualification
Your instructor qualification is valid for five years. You should be contacted by us prior to the expiry date shown on your certificate but if not, you can revalidate anyway. See how to revalidate.
Recognition Guidance Notes (RGNs)
RTCs and those working at them must operate according to the guidelines issued by the RYA, detailed on this website. These guidelines cover safety standards, operational requirements, conduct of courses and exams and, in general, the standards that need to be maintained by RTCs and, therefore, RYA Instructors. Please familiarise yourself with the RGNs and how to find what you need on this site.
Everything you need to know about the specific course(s) you are qualified to run is shown in either the Practical Centres or Shorebased Centres section of this site (RGN C and D).
