Towing and roof racking boats
This section provides an overview of the laws around transporting boats and equipment by road
The RYA has produced for its members guidance named Trailing and Roof Racking The Rules and Regulations.
This guidance details the general vehicle law relating to trailer sailors and roof-rackers and covers such points as the general duty to make loads and projections safe, insurance, length, width, height and weight restrictions, trailer fittings, lighting, and using a boat trailer on the road.
Guidance on trailing a boat abroad can be found under entry and exit formalities. If you are a member of the AA, RAC or other similar motoring organisation, please also see what guidance is available from those organisations.
You may also want to refer to the sections on Registration and Insurance.
If, after having read through the guidance, you have any queries please do contact the Legal Team Tel: 023 8060 4223.
