North East Region

The North East region covers Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, North Lincolnshire and Yorkshire

With varied and spectacular rural, industrial and coastal landscapes, the RYA North East region encompasses a diversity of opportunities to get on the water.

Bordered by the Pennines and the North Sea, and with counties from South Yorkshire up to Northumberland, there are countless clubs and training centres offering everything from informal dinghy and big boat cruising to full-on competitive racing both inland and on the coast.

Yacht and dinghy sailing clubs are dotted at regular intervals along the length of the Yorkshire and North East coast, including at Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough, Whitby, Hartlepool and Sunderland.

There are also numerous inland clubs, ranging from those that offer an urban oasis from busy lives – including many around West Yorkshire, Sheffield and Leeds – to venues such as Yorkshire Dales and Scaling Dam that provide an escape to wilder landscapes.

Characterised by a real sense of community, this extensive network of clubs and training centres offers a warm welcome for all levels from beginners to expert racers.

Wherever you live or travel in this region, there is the chance to enjoy the freedom and well-being benefits of being afloat, whether learning to sail in a dinghy or yacht, mastering a boardsport, enjoying club racing or competing at the very highest level.

The team

The RYA North East regional team are here to support you, your club or centre. We are a team of volunteers, staff, and contractors who work closely together to provide a network of support to grow activity and membership across the region.

 Together, the team provides:

  • Liaison between the Region's clubs and the RYA;
  • Co-ordination and encouragement of RYA National Training Schemes;
  • Representation of the wider interests of all forms of sailing, windsurfing, cruising, inland waterways and powerboating within the Region.

The Regional Integrated Team is comprised of three groups working together for the benefit of the Region, its Clubs and Members:

  • The RYA Regional Volunteer Team (RVT);
  • Specialist RYA Appointment Holders, e.g. Regional Planning and Environment Co-ordinator (RPEC), the Coastal Navigation or Inland Waterway representatives (CNP and INP) and racing related appointments: the Regional Racing Rules Adviser (RRA) and the Race Management Co-ordinator (RMC);
  • RYA Staff including the Regional Manager and Sailing Developers
