Course description
For centuries, sailors have guided their ships across oceans using celestial navigation or nautical astronomy. The RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory course teaches advanced techniques to those aspiring towards blue water cruising.
This course will introduce you to the principles of astro navigation, the practical use of a sextant, measurement of time, compass checking, and position fixing by the sun. For modern sailors it’s not only a fascinating art, but an essential aid to electronic navigation when crossing oceans.
This course will also cover the concepts of worldwide meteorology, including tropical revolving storms, and passage planning for ocean voyaging. Course content is expected to take a minimum of 40 hours to learn, plus exam time.
