Consumer protection
An overview of the consumer law that is likely to be applicable in the event of a dispute
Our guidance, Consumer Protection, provides an overview on consumer protection, which includes the basic principles relating to the Sale of Goods Act, the Misrepresentation Act, the Trade Description Act, the law relating to Unfair Contract Terms, the Supply of Goods and Services Act, and the Consumer Protection Act.
You should read this if:
- You have bought, in the UK, new goods that do not work;
- You have bought, in the UK, new goods that have failed in a shorter time than you believe to be reasonable;
- You have bought, in the UK, new goods that have minor defects;
- You have bought, in the UK, new goods whose appearance and finish is not what it should be;
- You have bought, in the UK, new goods that are unsafe.
If this applies to you, you should read the section on the Sale of Goods Act particularly carefully.
If matters have got to the point that you are seriously considering court proceedings, then you may find it useful to look at the overview of the court structure.
